Update on Utility Projects Along East 4th Street

[Duluth, MN] - The City of Duluth Public Works and Utilities Department has been working on utility upgrades along East 4th Street in anticipation of the total street reconstruction by St. Louis County Public Works this summer. The projects commenced in late April. The status of the projects are provided below:  

Gas main

The City has been work with contractors on a gas main upgrade along East 4th Street between 4th and 6th Avenues since April 25th. This project is advancing on May 16th with the gas main work crossing into the middle of the intersection of 4th Street and 6th Ave East. 

North and south bound traffic on 6th Ave will be accommodated but limited to one lane in each direction. Left turns will not be allowed at the intersection from any direction due to the location of the work site. Motorists traveling south with an eastbound destination should consider taking 9th Street as an alternate route. Those headed west towards downtown or to Essentia-St. Mary's hospital/clinics should take 3rd Street. Motorists should expect some delays. Access to local businesses will be maintained. The project is anticipated to be complete by the end of May.

Water main

The water main replacement project along East 4th Street between 15-16th Ave East is nearing completion with pavement repairs taking place next week. This work will require the concrete to cure for one week before vehicle traffic can pass. The road should open to motorists the week of May 23rd barring equipment complications or weather.
