The Duluth Fire Department responded to a call of a garage fire at 4822 Oakley St. in the Lakeside neighborhood. The call came in just after midnight. While enroute crews were notified that all occupants were out of the house. The first arriving crew reported a fully involved garage with flames extending to both the original and neighboring house. Handlines were stretched to the garage area to knockdown the main body of fire in that area. Crews were contending with 3 vehicles in the garage and driveway that were burning. The fire in the exposure house was quickly knocked down and crews started checking for extension in other areas of that house. The damage is estimated to be $40,000.00 to that house.
The main house had fire extension into the attic area. A hole was cut into the roof to aid with ventilation. Crews were able to bring that fire under control shortly thereafter. A total of 21 firefighters responded and remained on the scene for roughly three hours to bring the garage and both house fires to full extinguishment. The damage to the garage and initial house is estimated to be $100,000.00. The were no civilian or firefighter injuries. Occupants of the initial house were able to gather some belongings, but are unable to remain in the house. The owner of the exposure house was able to return to his home.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Duluth Fire Marshal's Office. Any further information will be provided by their office.
