Skyline Parkway Turns 125 Years Old

Volunteers encouraged to help clean-up the parkway

[Duluth, MN] - This year marks the 125th anniversary of Skyline Parkway, the first official tourist attraction of Duluth. The first section of the parkway was created in 1891 extending from Lincoln Park to Chester Bowl. Today, Skyline stretches 25.2 miles from Becks Road to Seven Bridges Road, ending at 60th Avenue East and is recognized as a Minnesota Superior Scenic Byway.

In recognition of the 125th anniversary, the City of Duluth’s Volunteer Program and the Duluth Preservation Alliance have teamed up to recruit volunteers to clean a one-mile stretch along Skyline in anticipation of the 125th anniversary celebration on July 31. Each team will be assigned to a section and can host up to 15 volunteers. Individuals, families (including youth ages 12+) and groups are encouraged to participate.

Park Maintenance staff, along with dedicated residents, community groups and concerned individuals have already spent hours working to keep the Parkway beautiful this year but additional work is needed. “Skyline offers breathtaking views of Duluth,” states Cheryl Skafte, Volunteer Coordinator, City of Duluth. “We want to do what we can as a community to maintain the beauty of the Parkway.”

Clean up event details are below:

Date: Saturday, July 16 (rain date Sunday, July 17)

Time: 9 AM to 10:30 AM

Check-In: Chester Bowl Park between 8 AM - 8:45 AM

The clean-up is part of a series of events featuring Skyline Parkway. Doug Stevens, Event Planner, Duluth Preservation Alliance, says, “We are excited to have folks out on the historic Parkway, getting it cleaned up for the 125th celebration.” The group will be hosting an event at Chester Park on Sunday, July 31, from 1PM to 3PM featuring cake, ice cream, fun, recreation, entertainment and history brought to life. Learn more about all the Skyline events at www.duluthmn.gov/parks.

The City of Duluth will provide provided all necessary supplies including bags, gloves, safety vests and more. Please contact Cheryl Skafte, Volunteer Coordinator, at cskafte@duluthmn.gov, or at (218) 730-4334 with questions.
