HUD to Provide ADA Training for Housing Program Providers, Landlords, and Residents in Duluth
[Duluth, MN] - Representatives from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) will be in Duluth on Tuesday, July 19th to provide training to local service providers, landlords, and residents on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Fair Housing Act. The training will take place from 1-3:30p.m. in the Downtown Duluth Library in the Green Room.
"To have HUD provide training for City of Duluth homeless and low-income sub-grantees and landlords alike ensures that our community is doing our part to have multi-family dwellings be readily accessible and usable by persons with disabilities,” said Keith Hamre, Director of Planning and Construction Services.
“Duluth has a very active renters market with an extremely low vacancy rate. It is important to the City of Duluth that housing discrimination is eliminated, and that housing opportunities are diverse and inclusive while operating under regulations set out by the ADA and Fair Housing Act,” Hamre said.
The City of Duluth provides funding through the HOME Investment Partnerships Program, Emergency Solutions Grant, and Community Development Block Grant to several non-profit agencies to build, buy or rehabilitate affordable housing for either rent or home ownership opportunities; in addition to helping those who are homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless with rental assistance in an effort to help clients to become self-sufficient.
Topics for the ADA and Fair Housing training will include: an overview of civil rights protections in housing, protection for those with disabilities, marketing and tenant selection, and the Fair Housing complaint process.
Members of the community who would like to attend can contact Kate Van Daele at 218-730-5301 or email at kvandaele@duluthmn.gov If you have questions about this event, please call Keith Hamre at 218-730-5480.
