Kenwood Ave and Arrowhead Road Intersection Will Soon See Improved Traffic Flow
[Duluth, MN] – The City of Duluth will be undergoing additional traffic signal upgrades at the intersection of Kenwood Ave and Arrowhead Road starting next Monday, August 8, 2016 as part of the ongoing traffic improvement plan at this intersection. The traffic signal work includes the replacement of the existing signal system at the Kenwood/Arrowhead intersection, including the installation of dedicated left turn lanes and arrows, along with pedestrian improvements. A new signal will also be installed at the intersection of Cleveland Street and Kenwood Avenue. These improvements were part of the City’s overall goals of providing efficient and safe operations for both vehicles and pedestrians by reducing congestion and improving traffic flow, along with improving access to surrounding businesses. The public will see workers and construction equipment on site and reduced width for driving lanes.
The pavement work includes a mill and overlay on the county’s portion of Kenwood Avenue/Howard Gnesen Road (CSAH 34) from Arrowhead Road to approximately 1700 feet north. We will also complete a reconditioning (a more intensive milling and paving) of Kenwood Avenue from Arrowhead Road to just south of Cleveland Street, along with a portion of Arrowhead Road from approximately 200 feet west of Kenwood Avenue, east to Dodge Avenue. Concrete repair and replacement will also be performed at the Kenwood/Arrowhead intersection.
The project will be phased accordingly: East and West Cleveland Street reconstruction; Kenwood/Cleveland St. intersection work; Arrowhead/Kenwood intersection; improved bank entrances, and milling and paving of Arrowhead Road and Kenwood Ave.
In conjunction with the Kenwood Village Development, Cleveland Street will be reconstructed and new watermain installed from Kenwood Avenue west to approximately 34 West Cleveland Street. Impacted residents will be notified in advance of any water shut offs. In the near future, a utility connection will be the only phase that requires total closure of this intersection. This will require traffic on Kenwood to use detour routes. The public will be notified of this phase once a date is secured.
On the days the water services are installed, access to Kenwood Avenue will be difficult because of trenching across the road. When the watermain connection is made at Kenwood Avenue, the alley will be the only access to Kenwood Avenue for the West Cleveland Street residents.
Project Timeline: Start date is August 8, 2016 with anticipated completion of October 15, 2016, barring any weather related setbacks.
