Utility Project to Start Along Superior Street
[Duluth, MN] - Utility crews will be preparing to line the 100+ year old sewer pipes under Superior Street between 4th Avenue West and 4th Avenue East in preparation for the future Superior Street Reconstruction. The work will commence during the weeks of August 22nd and August 29th.
Crews will start with cleaning the underground sewer pipes before lining can occur. The public should not experience any total road closures as the work entails one truck parked near a manhole cover. When cleaning is completed, the lining phase will start in early September.
There will be a time when sanitary sewer service is interrupted for 24 hours. Larger commercial properties will have bypass service, but this means crews will need to dig to access the sewer line directly in front of that business. Smaller commercial properties that do not use a lot of water will not notice the interruption. Businesses will be notified 24 hours before the lining occurs. Interruptions to sanitary sewer service will be limited to night time hours whenever possible. Excavations for temporary bypass services will occur during the day. The planned service interruption will only impact the properties on the upper side of Superior Street, not the lower side.
The total project time-frame is slated to take approximately six weeks. The condition of the pipes is requiring the contractor to begin the project at this time to ensure they can complete the project this fall. The City thanks the Greater Downtown Council for their partnership and communication with downtown businesses about this project.
Specific questions can be directed to Eric Shaffer, the City’s Chief Engineer of Utilities at (218) 730-5072.
