Superior Man Triathlon Traffic Advisory

 

On Sunday August 28th, the Superior Man Triathlon will be held in the Harbor & Bayfront Areas and on London Road resulting in various road closures.

The event starts at 6:30 a.m. when participants are dropped in the Harbor behind the DECC for the swim. Boating traffic in the harbor will be limited at this time.

 

Between 7-7:30 a.m., athletes return to the back of the DECC and transition to bicycles and travel through the Bayfront area, taking the closed 5th Ave West S/B off ramp to 1st Ave West to Michigan Street, Superior Street, London Road and the Highway 61 Expressway to Two Harbors where they turn around taking the Scenic Highway and the same route back to the DECC.  During the bike portion of this event the following roads will be closed:

   -Railroad Street - from 5th Ave West to the Pier B complex

   -Railroad Street- westbound lane only, from Harbor Drive to 5th Ave W.

   -Michigan Street-from 1st Ave West to Superior Street (4th Ave East)

   -Superior Street-from 3rd Ave E to 8th Ave E

   -Superior Street-from 8th Ave E to 10th Ave E will be open to WESTBOUND TRAFFIC only.

   -The parking lot next to VaBene Café will remain OPEN and is accessible from westbound Superior Street at 8th Avenue East

   -The Fitger's Inn and Fitger's Ramp will be accessible from Westbound Superior Street only.  When crossing Race Course Bike Lane-Bikes will have the right of way.  

   -London Road from 10th Ave E to 12th Ave E

   -21st Avenue East-from London Road down to Water Street will only have the up bound lane available for traffic.  The down bound lane will be restricted to bicycles.  Officers will be there assisting traffic up and down 21st Avenue East.

 

Freeway Ramps:

    -The 21st Ave East I-35 Ramps will be closed, however 26th Avenue East ramps will remain open.

  

 - I-35 Ramps on 5th Ave West will be affected.  The Northbound Off-Ramp and Southbound on-      ramp will remain open.

 

There will be a coned lane for bicyclists only on:

   -the East side of 5th Ave West

   - Harbor drive up to Railroad Street

  - The lower side of London Road from 12th Ave E to15th Ave E,

  -the lower side of London Road from 20th Ave E to 21st Ave E,

  -the lower side of London Road from 26th Ave E to the Highway 61 Expressway.

 

When bike participants return to the DECC they will transition from the bike portion of the race to running.  This will happen approximately 12 noon and the Bike course will then open to all traffic.

    -Runners will travel up Harbor drive and around the front of the Irvin taking the Bay Walk down to the pier, then up the Lake Walk behind the Canal Park Lodge where they turn left, then right up the ramp into Lake Place Park, back down to the Lake Walk to continue East turning around at Water street to take Lake Walk back down through the Endion parking lot merging into the upper coned lane of Railroad street.  Runners travel west on Railroad Street to turn around just before the Pier B lot and turn into the gravel DEDA lot and the path that leads behind the Bayfront stage.  Runners then spill out onto the Lake Walk and Harbor Drive to complete one final lap, finishing down the paved path into Bayfront Park. 

 

During the RUNNING PORTION of this event the following roads WILL BE CLOSED:

   -Harbor drive behind the DECC, from 5th Ave W BELOW the Aquarium lot, to just below the East DECC Lot Entrance (East DECC Lot Entrance on Harbor Drive and 5th Ave W Connector to Railroad St remain open).

   -One Upper West bound lane of Railroad Street from Lake place Drive to the DECC North gate. (The lower westbound will remain open for vehicles going to the DECC North gate)

   -Both westbound lanes of Railroad street from the DECC North gate west to the Pier B lot. 

 

DECC:

Access is down Lake Avenue or 5th Ave W to Railroad Street to either the Main North Gate on Railroad Street, or the East Gate on Harbor Drive.  From 6:30 a.m. until about 9:30 a.m. the East Gate EXIT will be closed - during the beginning of the BIKE PORTION of the event, however the entrance will not be affected.   That exit will re-open after all bikes have started and passed that point (about 9:30 a.m.).

 

Aquarium:

 Lot Access is down 5th Avenue West. However, that roadway will be closed to traffic from about 7:00 a.m. -9: 00 a.m.

 

Park Point and Canal Park:

Will be accessible down Lake Avenue, or 5th Avenue West using Railroad Street Eastbound.

 

Pier B:

Will be accessible from Garfield Avenue to Railroad Street.

 

Beacon Point:

Access using 21st Avenue East, with Officer assistance during the bike portion of the event, from 7:00 a.m. until approximately noon.

 All roads should be open to normal traffic by approximately 3:00 p.m.

Drivers in the area of this event should be observant of no parking signs, detours, heavy pedestrian traffic, and police officers directing traffic.
