Media Advisory

Campus Connector Trail Opening Celebration and Group Ride is

September 22, 2016 at 4 PM

at Junction Ave and College Street

[Duluth, MN] - Join Mayor Emily Larson, Chancellor Lynn Black from the University of Minnesota Duluth, Jennifer Widstrom with the College of St. Scholastica, Healthy Duluth Area Coalition, Duluth Bikes, students and other community partners as they celebrate the official opening of the Campus Connector Trail on Thursday, September 22, 2016 at 4 PM. Activities are planned following the news conference with details provided below.

The trail was planned with community input over two years ago with the intent of providing a 10 foot protected trail for non-motorized multipurpose use with a connection through several neighborhoods and the school campuses down to the Lakewalk Trail. The trail was constructed with a grant provided by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and City sources. Phase one of the Trail, that runs parallel to College Street, was completed between Kenwood Ave and Junction Ave this year prior to the start of the academic school year. Future plans include connections to Rice Lake Road and the Lakewalk Trail.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own bikes, engage in fun activities and go on a group ride  following the news conference. For those without bikes, a limited number will be made available for the group ride.

The schedule of activities is as follows:

4:00 PM – press conference at Junction Ave and College St.

Following the press conference - participants convene at UMD - Kirby Center Bus Hub:
4:30 – Bike Decorating Activity
5:00 – Bike Parade
5:00 – 5:30 – “Sign up for Prize Drawings” donated by various local businesses
5:30 – Leave for group ride from Kirby Center along the trail to St. Scholastica campus then return & end at Bluestone  around 6:30. The terminus of the group ride will be the Blue Stone Lofts apartments where ice cream will be served.

*Note: Any maroon, white, or pay lot at UMD is free after 5:00 pm. People can also pay at lots or at meters, or bike to the Bus Hub from off-campus
