Downtown Sewer Lining Project Update and Advisory
[Duluth, mN] - The City of Duluth is in the midst of a sewer lining project that started this past Monday along Superior Street from 4th Ave West to 4th Ave East. The project is currently finishing up at the 3rd Ave West intersection. This lining procedure has been used for the past 20 years to preserve our utility infrastructure and will help sustain the 100+ year old sewer line. Some downtown tenants and residents may be detecting an odor from this project. The City is advising the public and tenants that this lining process produces a strong odor and could make some individuals feel sick or have headaches. The smell typically dissipates once it reaches street level and for the most part is contained underground in the sewer system.
Anyone in the downtown vicinity detecting this odor inside their building should check traps for water and contact a plumber if the odor persists despite water presence in traps. Functional and well maintained plumbing will help prevent the odor from permeating through the sewer pipes. Ventilation can also help clear the smell.
This project is anticipated to be finished by November 4, 2016. Questions about this project can be directed to Tom Pfeffer, in the City Engineering Office at (218) 730-5104.
