Duluth woman is in custody for assaulting a Duluth Police Officer
 
At 1:30 PM today, a Duluth Police Officer was assaulted by a female who was smoking near a bus shelter in the 200 block of West Superior Street. The female suspect struck the female officer in the face sending the officer falling to the pavement. The suspect then pulled out two knifes and began swinging them in the direction of the officer. The female suspect fled from the scene on foot and was taken into custody a short time later in a nearby alley.
 
Leah Lynn Nelson, age 37 of Duluth, was transported to the St. Louis County Jail where she is being held pending formal charges.
 
The 40 year old Duluth officer was taken to a Duluth Hospital where she was treated and released. She is a 15 year veteran of the department and suffered a broken nose and concussion.
 
The investigation into the assault is ongoing and no further details are available at this time. Police believe there may be witnesses to the incident that they have not spoken with. Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the assault to contact investigators at (218) 730-5050.
