Winter Watch Information for Duluth Residents
[Duluth, MN] - Winter is finally here and for many this means getting out for fun winter activities. For others, it may pose a challenge to navigate streets or sidewalks. The City of Duluth is reminding the public that clearing sidewalks and maintaining safe streets is a partnership between residents and businesses and the City Street Maintenance team. As city crews are out plowing 500 miles of roads and clearing 100 miles of sidewalks, residents can help by following some simple do's and don't s to ensure safety for everyone. Always remember to keep a safe distance between your vehicle and snow plow trucks and drive slowly and cautiously.
Sidewalks: Shoveling sidewalks helps your neighbors. Duluth has a City Ordinance Chapter 45 Article VI which requires property owners with a public sidewalk abutting their property to remove snow and ice within 24-hours after a snowfall. This is necessary to ensure the safety of people using the sidewalks to reach their intended destinations. Please do not plow snow into the street. This is a violation and will result in a fine. If you know of someone who is disabled or not physically capable of shoveling, lend a hand. Duluthians have proven to be compassionate and demonstrate kindness when it comes to helping others.
Parking: To help keep streets plowed, residents and visitors who use on-street parking must follow alternate side parking schedule. The changeover occurs every Sunday evening. The week of November 21st is ODD side parking. This schedule is sent with utility bills and is posted online at http://www.duluthmn.gov/parking/on-street-parking/
Garbage/Recycling Bins: Garbage and recycling bins should be placed on the boulevard or on a driveway, but never in the street. These bins become obstacles to snow plow operations not to mention the possibility of garbage being strewn about when bins fall over.
The City follows a tiered system for sidewalk and street clearing during snowfall events. For additional information on this system or to report snow issues or concerns, visit the City's Winter Watch website at http://www.duluthmn.gov/winterwatch
or call (218) 730-5100 to leave a message about a snow related issue.
