The Duluth Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 2502 Piedmont Ave just before noon. Upon arrival crews found heavy smoke coming from the basement window of a one story single family house. Handlines were deployed to the front and rear of the house for fire attack. Heavy fire was found in the basement of the house. Crews extinguished the main body of fire, but encountered difficulties with hidden voids within the house.

The residents of the home had evacuated prior to our arrival. They are unable to stay at the residence at this time. 3 dogs were unable to be resuscitated and perished at the scene. 1 dog was able to safely escape. There were no other firefighter or civilian injuries. 24 firefighters responded to this call, and remained on scene for roughly three hours.

Initial damage estimates are $85,000.00. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time and any further information will be provided by the Duluth Fire Marshal's Office.
