NATURE OF INCIDENT: Beach Safety
CASE NO.:
INCIDENT DATE: 6/1/2017
INCIDENT TIME:
INCIDENT LOCATION: Park Point Beach

The Duluth Fire Department in cooperation with the National Weather Service and the Twin Ports Rip Current Awareness Group is announcing that beginning this year, rip current and swimming awareness programs will begin on June 1 and will continue through October 1. This range of dates replaces those of years past to better reflect the swimming season.

Duluth area swimmer awareness consists of rip current warning flags, signage and throw ring stations located on Park Point. Flag warning stations (3) are displayed at 12th St Beach, Lafayette Community Center and the Beach House at Park Point. Throw ring stations (4) are located at 700 S. Lake Ave, 12th St. Beach, Lafayette Community Center and at the Beach House on Park Point.

All swimmers and beach patrons are advised to “Know Before You Go” by using the website, http://parkpointbeach.org/ This website gives up to the minute data on beach conditions, UV index, water temperature and water quality. Swimmers are encouraged to be proficient for the conditions before entering the water. This includes letting someone know where you are going and when you plan to return. Always swim with a buddy and be prepared for frigid water temperatures. This includes wearing a wetsuit rated for the right water temperature. Be aware of rip currents and rip current warning systems. This includes being familiar with flags and signage. Never swim near piers, as unforeseen conditions can make currents hazardous.
