Michigan Street Utilities upgrades in downtown Duluth resumes July 17th

[Duluth, MN] - Michigan Street in downtown Duluth has undergone a significant utilities upgrade project since April involving electrical, gas, and water lines. This complex project has been progressing well, with the first phase completed on June 30th, resulting in a temporary re-opening of Michigan Street between July 1st and 16th.

Phase 2 of this construction project will impact Michigan Street from 2nd Avenue West by the US Bank Building, to 1st Avenue West below the Allete/Minnesota Power Headquarters. The street closure will begin at 6:00 AM July 17 and will remain closed until early October.

Currently, Michigan Street at 3rd Ave West is fully open to traffic and the Duluth Transit Authority buses have resumed regular operations from the Duluth Transit Center. This intersection will be an important access point as the project transitions into the 2nd phase. Motorists seeking parking at the US Bank Parking Ramp will need to utilize 3rd Avenue West then turn onto Michigan Street to access the temporary ramp entrance.

The 1st Ave West intersection will be closed for about 4-5 weeks later this summer to accommodate utility installations.  Access to Michigan Street businesses between 1st Avenue West and 1st Avenue East will be available from 1st Avenue East, where this portion of Michigan Street will be signed for two-way traffic. This includes the parking facilities connected to the Allete office building.
