Sewer Lining Project in downtown Duluth to Start September 22

Vehicle access to be maintained

[Duluth, MN] - The City of Duluth Public Works and Utilities department will be lining the sewer along West Michigan Street between 2nd Ave West and 5th Ave West starting next weekend. A crew will be using a cured in place pipe (CIPP) lining to extend the integrity and reliability of the sewer for many decades to come. This process does not require excavation of the road and is primarily completed using manhole access points. The City conducted this same work along Superior Street last summer. Businesses in the project area have been notified well in advance and accommodations have been incorporated to lessen the impact to customers. The CIPP process typically takes about 3 days and some pedestrians may sense an odor emanating from the sewer which should dissipate quickly.

The work will progress one block at a time starting with the 300 block of West Michigan Street on September 22-24, then the 400 block September 29-October 1, and finally the 200 block during the weekend of September 29-October 1 or alternatively, the weekend of October 13-15.

This project will not close both driving lanes but utility trucks will need to position over manholes to access the sewer line therefore, motorists can expect a partial lane closure on the block where the crew is working.

Motorists are asked to drive slowly and cautiously for the safety of the workers.
