Duluth, first in Minnesota to use shared road symbol

Motorists and bikers will soon be seeing a new pavement marking on Kenwood Avenue in the City of Duluth. The City has received approval to use a new Shared Lane Pavement Marking (aka "sharrow") – a white stencil marking with a bike and chevron (see image). Kenwood Avenue will be the first location in the state of Minnesota to use the painted symbol which is not yet available to other cities in the state.

The sharrow indicates that motorists and bicyclists are to share the marked travel lane. The markings will be applied to Kenwood sometime late next week (May 12 through May 14, 2010), weather permitting. This new marking does not designate a separate lane but serves as a pavement-bound “share the road” reminder. Bicyclists are legally allowed on all streets in the city of Duluth, for the exception of the interstate system. Kenwood Avenue in particular is a designated bicycle route.

As with any traffic control device (road paint, signs, signals), the sharrows are used to assist in guiding and warning travelers, but it does not substitute for safe and responsible driving or bicycling practices.  Share the road and please drive safely.
