Storm Drain Maintenance Planned for August 21 by Lakewalk Trail

[Duluth, MN] - The City of Duluth and the Minnesota Department of Transportation are collaborating to clear out a partially clogged storm drain pipe which runs under the freeway and the Lakewalk Trail. The high lake levels in recent years and wind conditions continue to push sand and rocks into the storm drain which clogs the pipe and results in standing water in the I35 tunnel during rainfall events. Crews need to clear the storm outlet to improve water flow.

Crews will be transporting and using large heavy equipment on the Lakewalk Trail for this work and will require a temporary closure of the Trail between Endion Station and the Veteran memorials for most of the day on Tuesday, August 21, 2018. Signs will be posted in the perimeter of the project zone and a detour will direct trail users into Lake Place Park.

The project is expected to take the entire day and the Lakewalk Trail should reopen by early evening. Crews will remain in the project zone for a couple of days finishing up work along the shoreline and removing equipment. This should not impact public access to the Trail. The completion of this project is dependent on good weather conditions.
