Atlas Cement site, preparations for future development underway

The Duluth Economic Development Authority (DEDA) is taking steps to prepare the Atlas Industrial Park for future tenants. A rusted chain link fence topped with barbed wire will be removed this week. The removal of the 50 year old rusted fence is the next step to redeveloping the property as an industrial park to foster growth in the manufacturing, technology, warehousing and distribution sectors.

“The fence represents 30 years of blight and brownfields. Removing this old fence signifies the commitment of the City to these neighborhoods and a new era of light industrial job development in Duluth,” said Mayor Don Ness.

New signs identifying the Atlas Industrial Park will be displayed to motorists and potential business developers along Commonwealth Ave as traffic is routed through Morgan Park due to the I-35 construction project. City crews will also be sprucing up the property, clearing brush, and mowing the grass to increase curb appeal.

DEDA intends to have the fence removed this month and a new one will be installed to protect the property for future occupants. Further site assessment will be done this summer or fall in preparation of the construction of new streets and utilities in 2011. The Environmental Protection Agency and the Minnesota Department of Economic Development have partnered with the City and DEDA to provide funds for assessment, site remediation and infrastructure work.
