William A. Irvin Ship Set to Depart Tonight
Minnesota Slip Bridge Pinned Up
[Duluth, MN] - The City of Duluth is informing the public that the Minnesota Slip Bridge will be pinned in the up position starting today until Monday morning, September 24 to allow the safe departure of the William A. Irvin ship. The pedestrian bridge is being pinned up with the scheduled departure of the ship around 8 PM tonight, September 21. This complex and methodical process will require about 4-5 hours to reposition the ship to Fraser Ship Yard as the ship will travel one foot every 4-5 seconds.
For a complete explanation of the moving process, please view this video of Chad Scott, with AMI Consultants, explain the very involved and delicate process, https://youtu.be/aKLuxn3_VyM
The City recommends that members of the public who wish to view the event do so from the boardwalk on the east side of Minnesota Slip in Canal Park. There will be no public access in the immediate vicinity of the west side of the Minnesota Slip and from the Marcus Theatres parking lot to the Minnesota Slip Bridge. A second viewing area is also possible on the grassy area between the DECC and Great Lakes Aquarium as the ship moves further out. Parking is available at the DECC. Stay tuned for updates from the City in case of weather delays or changes.
