Mayor Larson and Economic Development Partners to Recognize Manufacturing Week with Tours on

Friday, October 5, 2018 at 9:00 AM and 10 AM

Lake Superior College Integrated Manufacturing Program Downtown and GPM Inc.

[Duluth, MN] - Mayor Emily Larson, economic development partners, educational leaders, and the Duluth Workforce Development Center will visit two locations on October 5th to highlight the significance and impacts of manufacturing in the Duluth area as part of "Manufacturing Week" in Minnesota. Governor Mark Dayton has proclaimed October 1-7 as Minnesota Manufacturing Week. "Manufacturing represents one in nine jobs, supports a payroll of $21 billion; and contributed over $49.2 billion to the state's economy last year," stated Governor Dayton. Here in Duluth, a new Women’s Economic Security Act (WESA) grant aims to fill the manufacturing workforce needs with a new training program.

At 9:00 AM, Mayor Larson and officials will visit with participants in the machine operations course created with Women’s Economic Security Act (WESA)  grant funds from the state of Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED). This program is currently being taught at the Lake Superior College (LSC), Integrated Manufacturing Campus in downtown Duluth (120 N. 2nd Ave West), focused on recruiting and training women who are underrepresented in this industry then connecting them to employment.

Following the visit to LSC, the Mayor and course participants will travel and conduct a tour at 10:00 AM with the General Manager of GPM Inc. (4432 Venture Ave) and learn about current and future job prospects for women and others interested in entering the manufacturing field. GPM Inc. is a local company that manufactures submersible slurry and dewatering pumps.

Members of the media are invited to attend both tours. Due to limited space, please email ply@dultuhmn.gov to confirm participation.
