City of Duluth Reminds Public That Lakewalk Trail is Closed

Clean Up in Progress

[Duluth, MN] - The City of Duluth is reminding the public that the Lakewalk Trail is officially closed from the Lighthouse parking lot to Leif Erikson Park until further notice. The City is urging the public to stay clear of the damaged areas for their own safety and also to allow work crews to conduct clean up. Starting Monday, October 15, at 7 AM, crews will be using heavy equipment along the Lakewalk Trail in Canal Park to start clearing the debris. This work is critical to ensuring that a safe and accessible temporary path is reopened in a timely manner for avid trail users. Public presence in the work area creates a safety concern. The clean up can take up to 7 days.

There are significant hazards along the damaged Trail such as dangling light pendants and electrical wires, loose boardwalk with exposed nails, dislodged cement with protruding rebar, loose soil/gravel, and other unstable large debris.

We appreciate the public interest and concern, but encourage the public to focus their attention towards public safety and restoration. In the instance that volunteer efforts can be organized in the future, the City will publicize those events. The Lakewalk Trail is not only a highly visible park amenity but also a valued asset. We thank the public for their cooperation and patience.

Please note the following areas that are also closed to the public:

  • Park Point: 12th Street beach access boardwalk has shifted and therefore has been blocked off.
  • Pedestrian path behind the Ledges residential units east of 21st Ave East
  • Brighton Beach is closed due to road and shoreline erosion.
  • The sidewalk between the DECC and Great Lakes Aquarium has been disturbed and dislodged.
