SUBJECT: UPDATE: Officer Involved Shooting

INCIDENT TIME: 6:29 p.m.
INCIDENT LOCATION: 1000 Block W Skyline Pkwy

[DULUTH, MN] - On Sunday, January 13, 2019 at 6:29 p.m. officers responded to a report of a domestic assault with a weapon at the 1000 block of W Skyline Parkway. Squads arrived on the scene and developed probable cause for a felony-level domestic assault. Officers located the male suspect in the residence and began to negotiate with him for his arrest. After approximately an hour of negotiations, the suspect began firing at officers striking one officer causing a non-life threatening injury and killing his K-9 partner. An officer returned fire. Upon gaining access to the room where the suspect was located they found the individual deceased. The injured officer has been released from the hospital. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension will be conducting this investigation. The next update will be on Monday, January 14, 2019. 

UPDATE: The officer injured on 1/13/2019 was Officer Aaron Haller, a four-year veteran of the Duluth Police Department and K-9 Handler for the past two years. His K-9 partner, Haas, was killed during the incident. Haas was three years old and received 1st place honors in criminal apprehension at the annual USPCA regional trials last summer.
