Utility Work to begin Monday, May 20 On West Superior Street

[Duluth, MN] The City of Duluth has determined that a coupling on the water main installed in Superior Street last year is leaking between Fifth Avenue West and Sixth Avenue West on Superior Street.  The coupling is located adjacent to the skywalk tunnel under the street between the Radisson Hotel and the library. The coupling in question was used to connect the new piping to existing steel piping located within the tunnel structure.  This style coupling has been used in the past by the City with good success.

Excavating the coupling will begin on Monday, May 20, 2019, and is expected to take a month to complete. The coupling will be replaced with a different style connection.  A second, similar coupling is located on the opposite side of the tunnel, and will be replaced as a precautionary measure.

During this time sidewalks will remain open.

While no official detour will be set, Michigan Street can be used for westbound traffic and First Street for eastbound traffic.
