Ceremony to Rename Lake Place Park to Take Place on May 31st

[Duluth, MN] On May 31^st at 1 p.m. there will be a naming ceremony to rename Lake Place Park as Gichi-ode' Akiing.  Gichi-ode' Akiing means A Grand Heart Place in Ojibwe. In renaming the Park, this move will help recognize the language, history, and improve the visibility of the Native Community in Onigamiinsing- the City of Duluth.

Mayor Emily Larson will be joined by Chairman Kevin Dupuis of the Fond Du Lac Band for the official naming ceremony.  At this event, the Eagle Staff will be presented by the Duluth Indigenous Commission to Fond Du Lac Band in recognition of reconciliation between the City of Duluth and the Band.

“This is a memorable moment for the Anishinaabe and all Native people living in this area. We are strengthening our presence in our community, we are visible and our language enhances our sense of belonging. This day of naming a park Gichi-ode’ Akiing is a victory for our ancestors and our future generations! The current leadership embraces us and the time is right. We will only get stronger from here," said Babette Sandman, Chair of the Duluth Indigenous Commission

The ceremony will be held at the Downtown Lakewalk Entrance at 2^nd Avenue East and East Superior.

During Superior Street construction the following parking ramps are open:

• Medical District Ramp - 302 East First Street
• Tech Village Ramp - 10 East First Street
• Hart District Ramp - 125 East Superior Street

Pedestrian access through the construction zone and to the Lakewalk entrances will remain open.
