[DULUTH, MN] — June 18, 2019— Law enforcement personnel representing the City of Duluth area will run in the Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg for Special Olympics Minnesota on June 19, 2019. They will run through the area handing off the torch as part of the Final Leg, a multi-day event in which law enforcement representatives relay the “Flame of Hope” more than 1,000 miles across Minnesota to the Celebration Ceremonies of Special Olympics Minnesota’s State Summer Games on Friday, June 21, 2019.

The officers are part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics, the largest grassroots fundraising and public awareness vehicle benefiting Special Olympics Worldwide. Its mission is to raise funds for, and awareness of, the Special Olympics movement worldwide. It began in 1981 in Wichita, Kan. as an opportunity for local officers to volunteer with Special Olympics in the communities where they live and work. Today, law enforcement from the 50 United States, 10 Canadian provinces and territories, and 32 countries carry the “Flame of Hope” as part of the Final Leg in honor of Special Olympics athletes in their area and around the world.
The Final Leg is a statewide relay/run event put on by the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Minnesota (SOMN). Officers from over 75 agencies across the state work together to carry the torch and the Flame of Hope a total of 1,066 miles to Summer Games in support of SOMN. This year, the torch will be carried through 64 different cities and towns. The Final Leg runs will take place across Minnesota the week of June 17-22, cumulating in St. Paul on Friday evening, June 21 at Summer Games Celebration Ceremonies. To get involved or learn more, contact torchrun@somn.org or visit somn.org/finalleg.
The 2019 Special Olympics Minnesota Summer Games will be held June 21-23 at the University of St. Thomas, 2115 Summit Avenue in St. Paul. There will be more than 3,500 athletes and coaches competing in the games and hundreds of family, volunteers and fans cheering on the Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg runners as they run the “Flame of Hope” into celebration ceremonies.
