Public Comment Needed on Environmental Assessment Worksheet for the Spirit Lake Sediment Remediation Project

[Duluth, MN] - The City of Duluth is accepting public comments during a 30-day public review period (July 22 to August 21, 2019), for an Environmental Assessment Worksheet (EAW) that was prepared for the Spirit Lake Sediment Remediation Project.  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Great Lakes National Program Office are planning to remediate contaminated sediment and improve habitat in the Spirit Lake area of the Saint Louis River and adjacent to the U.S. Steel property.  The project would entail 226 acres and includes 770,000 cubic yards of sediment removal, 107 acres of subaqueous capping, 41 acres of enhanced natural recovery, and over 100 acres of habitat enhancement and restoration.  Materials removed would be placed in onsite confined disposal facilities.

The EAW provides information on the environmental impacts of this project. The EAW is available online at https://duluthmn.gov/planning-development/environmental/environmental-assessment-worksheets/ .  A hard copy is available for review at the City of Duluth, Planning and Development Division, 411 West First Street, Room 160, Duluth.

Written comments must be submitted no later than 4:30 p.m. on August 21, 2019, to the attention of Adam Fulton, Deputy Director of Planning and Economic Development, 411 West First Street, Room 160, Duluth, MN 55802. Electronic comments may be sent to planning@duluthmn.gov with “Spirit Lake EAW comments” in the subject line.  If submitting comments electronically, please include your full name and postal mailing address.

The Duluth Planning Commission will hold a public hearing to receive comments on the EAW on Tuesday, August 13, 2019, 5:00 p.m., in the 3rd Floor Council Chambers of Duluth City Hall, 411 West First Street.

The Commission will decide on the EAW on Tuesday, September 10, 2019, 5:00 p.m., in Council Chambers of Duluth City Hall, 411 West First Street.
