Alternate route will provide access to Blatnik from Duluth

Since the I-35 project commenced, and the southbound I-35 ramp to the Blatnik Bridge was closed, the City of Duluth and MN/DOT have been receiving complaints about traffic backups at the Railroad Street/Garfield Avenue intersection in Duluth during rush hour.  Starting next week, motorists are encouraged to use West Superior Street and Garfield Avenue to access the Blatnik Bridge.
 

In an effort to improve traffic flow, MN/DOT installed a temporary signal at the West Superior/Michigan Street intersection.  Early next week, crews will be modifying the signal at the West Superior Street/Garfield Avenue intersection to provide a protected left turn phase.  By providing this protected left turn movement onto Garfield Avenue, traffic should move more smoothly on this preferred alternate route.  Motorists from the downtown area are encouraged to use this route, rather than the Railroad Street route during the afternoon commuting hours.
