NATURE OF INCIDENT: Structure fire
CASE NO.: 20-3386
INCIDENT DATE: 3/30/2020
INCIDENT TIME: 01:07
INCIDENT LOCATION: 607 E 9th St

At 0107 this morning, the Duluth Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 607 E 9th St. Duluth Police Department Officers were on the scene of a mental health related incident. The individual had started some clothes on fire in an upstairs bedroom.

Duluth Police Officers had removed all occupants prior to our arrival. Upon DPD clearing the house, we were able to knock down the fire. The fire was contained to an upstairs bedroom, but the smoke had damaged a majority of the house. There were two occupants and two dogs inside the house at the time of the fire. They were not able to remain at the house due to the extensive smoke damage.

Initial damage estimates were determined to be $45,000 for room and contents. The cause of the fire was determined to be mental health related arson. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries.

Fire companies from Headquarters Station, Lincoln Park, and U.M.D. Stations responded to the fire call and remained on scene for two hours.

This was a challenging call from both a Law Enforcement and firefighting perspective, which resulted in great collaboration between the two agencies.
