Mayor Larson to Recognize National Service Members Tuesday, April 7

[Duluth, MN] Mayor Emily Larson and the Northland AmeriCorps Collaborative will celebrate national service members in a virtual meeting on Tuesday, April 7, from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. This marks the eighth Annual National Service Recognition Day where community leaders recognize ad highlight significant contributions of engaged citizens. In previous years, the mayor has hosted a reception at City Hall, but due to COVID-19, this year’s celebration will be held in a Zoom meeting.

“Our local, national service members are making a difference every day in our community,” says Lindsey Molstad, Director of Service Experience, Reading and Math, Inc. “From serving in schools and community organizations building up education and life skills of young people to initiating anti-poverty solutions in low-income neighborhoods, national service members are at the forefront of some of the most challenging issues facing Duluth.”

Over the past year, Duluth has had approximately 100 national service members that served our community. Members have served with Reading and Math Corps, Inc., True North AmeriCorps, Ecolibrium3, AmeriCorps VISTA, Minnesota GreenCorps, Northern Bedrock Historic Preservation Corps, Minnesota Conservation Corps and Senior Corps.

“AmeriCorps members provide a huge service to the Duluth community every year,” said Mayor Emily Larson. “Many non-profits rely on these members to play crucial roles in their organizations. I really look forward to hearing from all of the members and celebrating their accomplishments at this event.”

This annual initiative takes place the first Tuesday in April and is led by the Corporation of National and Community Service (CNCS), the National League of Cities, the National Association of Counties, and Cities of Service. The day recognizes how Mayors and city leaders, county officials, and tribal leaders across the country are using national service more and more to solve their community’s toughest challenges. Community members are welcome to join the meeting to hear directly from AmeriCorps members on the impact that they have had in Duluth, and how their service has changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Links to access the celebration can be found below:
