Portions of 2nd Street to be closed for the Construction Season

[Duluth, MN] Starting today, May 18, portions of 2nd Street will be closed for complete reconstruction. This reconstruction project will take place in two phases over two years. This year's work includes reconstruction of 2nd Street from 12th Avenue East to 200 feet west of 9th Avenue East. Phase II work on 2nd Street will begin again in 2021 and will be from 9th Avenue East to 6th Avenue East.  The project will replace all existing surfacing, utilities and will install a new hot water line to the St. Luke’s Hospital complex. The new roadway will be asphalt with concrete intersections.

“This project is being funded in part by State Bond funds that were secured by the City in 2019 to redevelop the Duluth Medical District,” said City of Duluth Senior Engineer Duncan Schwensohn. “In addition to replacing all existing utilities and surfacing, this project will allow for St. Luke’s to connect to the Duluth Energy hot water system.”

The intersections at 9th, 10th, and 12th are currently open to north-south traffic. Phase I is expected to be completed in October.
