INCIDENT LOCATION: 300 block of Garfield Avenue
On Sunday, July 11, 2010 at 3:53 pm, Duluth Police responded to the report of a possible theft in progress at an industrial corporation on Garfield Avenue. Two people were observed loading pipe from the yard there into a truck and then leave. Officers located and stopped the vehicle and its occupants a short distance away. In the bed of the truck officers observed several pieces of heavy thick walled alloy steel pipe and later learned it had been stolen from corporation.
Police later went to an address in the 5300 block of London Road where the vehicle occupants reside and found additional pieces of stolen pipe. At this time the value of the recovered stolen pipe is in excess of $50,000.00.
Peter Alan Diehl, age 25, and Erica Lynn McNichols-Diehl, age 19, both of Duluth, were lodged at the St. Louis County Jail and charged with felony Theft.
Duluth Police would like to notify area businesses and individuals that the theft of scrap metal or pipe, along with copper wire, is big business, the theft of wire and scrap metal is a large problem in the region. Police ask that those who sell, use, or deal in these types of materials store them in secured areas, such as locked fenced in yards with video surveillance. They are also asked to check their materials to see if they have any missing. If they discover that they are also a victim of a recent theft, to report it by calling 911.
