Chief Tusken responds to Duluth’s first homicide of the year

[Duluth, MN] In regards to the homicide that took place on Saturday, May 22, the Duluth Police Department is not able to provide any additional information on the incident because it is still being actively investigated. Providing any additional information at this time could impede the investigation, and the results that could come from it.

Duluth Police Chief Mike Tusken, did want to issue a statement on the city’s first homicide of the year.

“Any loss of life is significant,” Chief Mike Tusken said. “The victim was someone’s son. He was someone’s friend. This is a tragedy for his family, and for those who knew him. This act also impacts the sense of safety in our community.”

“This is an example of guns being in the hands of people who are using guns to solve conflict instead of alternative non-violent methods,” Tusken said. “The Duluth Police Department works actively to take guns off of the streets every day. We work with the Lake Superior Violent Crimes Task Force, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) to take guns out of the hands of people who are possessing or using firearms illegally.”

Since Saturday’s incident, the Duluth Police Department has increased its presence in the downtown area in response to the shooting.

This is the fourteenth shooting event that has taken place in Duluth this year.

Additional information will be provided when the Department is able to issue it.
