NATURE OF INCIDENT: House Fire @ 818 E 8th St.
CASE NO.: 10-004899
INCIDENT DATE: 7/24/2010
INCIDENT TIME: 0904
INCIDENT LOCATION: 818 E. 8th St.

At 0904 hours this morning, the Duluth Fire Department was dispatched to a house fire at 818 E 8th St. Firefighters arrived within three minutes and smoke was reported coming from the second story of a two story single family home.

Initial arriving companies gained entry and quickly knocked down the fire, containing it to a single room on the second floor. Though fire damage was limited to this room; there is significant smoke damage throughout the second floor.

The homeowners were home and sleeping at the time of the fire. One of them awoke to a room full of smoke, and both occupants of the home were able to escape. They were treated on the scene for smoke inhalation.

There were a number of smoke detectors present in the home; however none were functional during this mornings fire. The Duluth Fire Department would ask that all property owners take the time to ensure smoke alarms are working properly. It is by pure luck that the outcome of this morning's fire was not a tragedy.

Initial damage estimates are set at $25,000. The origin and cause is under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshal's Office. Fire companies from UMD, Downtown and Lincoln Park responded to the fire.
