City crews responding to a water main break on the 200 block of East 5th Street

[Duluth, MN] City of Duluth Utility Operations crews are responding to a water main break located on the 200 block of East 5th Street. The break was reported at approximately 7:45p.m. Water has been shut off on 2nd Avenue East from 5th to 6th Street, 3rd Avenue East from 4th to 6th Street, and on 5th Street from 2nd Avenue East to 4th Avenue East. It is not known at this time how long it will take the fix the break.

The water main break is believed to have been caused by a lightning strike that hit Hope City Church, and travelled through the ground. Due to the amount of debris caused by the lightning strike, and the structural damage to the building, it is expected that vehicular traffic will be limited around the area until further notice.

City staff would like to thank those in the affected area for their patience. Crews are working to repair the break and restore water service as quickly as they can.
