City of Duluth to close a portion of East 5^th Street due to public safety concerns

[Duluth, MN] Due to public safety concerns related to the Hope City Church, the City of Duluth will be closing a portion of East 5^th Street until further notice. Hope City Church was struck by lightning on Saturday, August 28. One of the church’s two steeples was directly hit reducing the steeple to its frame.

“Due to the instability of the structure, the City is closing off the street for public safety reasons,” Duluth Fire Chief Shawn Krizaj said. “We have been in contact with Pastor Mark, and the church will be further evaluating the structure tomorrow.”

The church is located at 417 North 3^rd Avenue East. The roadway on East 5^th Street will be closed from the intersection of 3^rd Avenue East to approximately 224 East 5^th Street. Crews from Public Works are in the process of closing the street as of 6:15 p.m. this evening. Again, this portion of the street will be closed to all traffic until further notice.
