BY: Lyanne Valdez
The Duluth Public Library Events & Programs:
Library Card Sign-Up Month:
September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, a time when the Duluth Public Library joins the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide to remind parents, caregivers, and students that signing up for a library card is the first step on the path to academic achievement and lifelong learning.
The DPL is entering anyone who signs up for a library card during the month of September a chance to win a $50 gift card to a local bookstore. Through access to technology, media resources, and educational programs, a library card gives students the tools to succeed in the classroom and provides people of all ages opportunities to pursue their dreams and passions.
Teen Advisory Board (T.A.B):
The Duluth Public Library is inviting local teens to join its new Teen Advisory Board (T.A.B.). The Teen Advisory Board will meet once a month. It will provide input to the library to create a dynamic place where teens will want to come. Teens will assist library staff in creating teen programming, suggest books and materials for the library to purchase, promote the library to their peers, and more.
“Having teens tell us what they want from their library is the key to creating a dynamic place that teens want to come to,” explained Senior Duluth Public Library Technician, Heidi Harrison. “It will be great for the teens that are involved to earn volunteer experience and also for the library to gain their insight and input into making our space what teens need from their community library.”
Interested teens are invited to stop by one of two Teen Advisory Board (T.A.B.) open houses to learn more and are invited to apply.

Hispanic Heritage Month at the Duluth Public Library:
September 15 through October 15 marks National Hispanic Heritage Month, which celebrates the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central, and South America.
The DPL has set up displays at the Main Library and branches, honoring the culture by hand-selecting books from our collection by either Hispanic authors or illustrators. Patrons will have the chance to come to view the displays and check out the books. New books will be rotated each week.
