Lake Superior Stormwater Chalkfest to conclude at Harbor City International School
[Duluth, MN] The Lake Superior Stormwater Chalkfest will close tomorrow, Friday, October 15, with the final group of students participating at Harbor City International School. Chalkfest was a week-long event meant to literally “draw” attention to how the public impacts local waterways. Due to rainy weather, the event at Harbor City had been postponed.
From September 25 through October 2, sixteen different groups, including 300 people participated in the event. The sixteen groups ranged from independent artists to local middle and high schools. Organizations including the American Indian Community Housing Organization, Ecolibrium3, and various student clubs at the University of Minnesota Duluth also participated in the Chalkfest.
Throughout the week, groups were able to choose where they wanted to draw, which resulted in a large geographic scope of chalk drawings. From Chambers Grove Park in the Fond du Lac neighborhood to sidewalks near Lester Park Elementary and plenty of places in between, many areas of the city were decorated with vibrant chalk drawings showing appreciation for Lake Superior. Some groups chose to educate the public with their chalk drawings, pointing out nearby rain gardens, impervious surfaces, and storm drains. Others highlighted how we harm waterways, drawing pictures of pollution, oil spills, and litter. Many drew what Lake Superior - and water as a whole - means to them.
The Chalkfest event at Harbor City International School will take place with classes drawing during the following class periods: 8:30 - 9:24 a.m., 9:28 - 10:22 a.m., 12:34 -1:28 p.m., and 2:30 - 3:24 p.m. Students will be creating their artwork on the front of the school on Michigan Street. Stop by to see the fantastic artwork students create!
The Lake Superior Stormwater Chalkfest was funded in part by the Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972, as amended, administered by the Office for Coastal Management, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration under Award NA19NOS4190063 provided to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources for Minnesota’s Lake Superior Coastal Program.
