Family and pets are uninjured during Central Hillside structure fire

[Duluth, MN] A Central Hillside family and their pets have been displaced tonight after fire damaged their home.  At 6:30 p.m. tonight, February 22, 2022, the Duluth Fire Department responded to the report of a structure fire on the 600 block of East 6th Street. The resident living in the home reported that an outlet on the first floor of the home was smoking. On arrival, firefighters confirmed the smoke, and found an active fire in the wall where the fire was first reported.

Many of family members were already out of the home when fire crews arrived on scene. Two cats were safely secured in a room in the basement away from the fire. The family dog and cats were then transported to the family’s car during the fire. No person or animals were injured during the incident.

While crews worked to extinguish the fire found in a first-floor wall, other crews worked to put out fire extension that reached the attic. The roof did not need to be cut into due to fast action by firefighters.

Crews from Headquarters, Lincoln Park, and UMD responded to the fire.

Fire officials estimate $45,000 in damage to the structure and its contents. The family has been temporarily displaced due to the amount of fire and smoke damage in the home. Thanks to the Red Cross the family has secured a place to stay for the night.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshal’s Office. No additional information is available at this time.
