Enger Tower lit in red tonight, March 21 for World Down Syndrome Day

[Duluth, MN] Enger Tower will be lit in red tonight to recognize World Down Syndrome Day. World Down Syndrome Day falls on March 21 each year to signify the uniqueness of the triplication of the 21st chromosome, which is what causes Down Syndrome. Today, March 21, 2022, marks the tenth anniversary of World Syndrome Day, which the United Nations created.

A person without Down Syndrome has 46 chromosomes. A person with Down Syndrome has an extra chromosome totaling 47.

According to the Down Syndrome Association of Minnesota, there are approximately 4,200 Minnesotans with Down Syndrome. The Minnesota Department of Public Health estimates that 116 babies are born with Down Syndrome each year.
