SUBJECT: City crews work to repair broken sewer line
BY: Pakou Ly
The City of Duluth reports that erosion due to the heavy rain caused a large boulder to dislodge onto the street near 27th Ave West and 8th St. at 12:00 PM today, August 20, 2010. The impact of the boulder caused a break in an underground sewer line. Utility operations crews responded to the call and are working to repair the break. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency was notified immediately, according to general protocol.
Initial assessments indicate that a leak from the broken sewer line may be stormwater which is draining into a nearby storm drain. The City of Duluth reminds residents to avoid contact with any sewer overflow due to the potential for exposure to disease-causing organisms. Residents are also asked to report any overflows from a manhole. Storm sewers and sanitary sewers may lift and move manhole covers creating a dangerous fall hazard when the overflow ceases. Contact the City of Duluth at 730-4150, 24 hours per day to report overflowing manholes or any open manhole.
For additional information, contact Utility Operations Manager Steve Lipinski at (218) 730-4130; or Pakou Ly in the City’s Communications Office at (218) 730-5309.
