NATURE OF INCIDENT: Structure Fire
CASE NO.: 5557
INCIDENT DATE: 5/15/2022
INCIDENT TIME: 3:36 p.m.
INCIDENT LOCATION: 1900 block Jefferson St.

Today at 3:36 p.m. the Duluth Fire Department responded for a report of a structure fire in the 1900 block of Jefferson St.  4 Quint from the UMD Station was the first fire unit to arrive and reported heavy fire on the delta side of a four-unit apartment building extending into the eaves with smoke pushing from the eaves and the attic vents. The crew from 4 Quint made an aggressive interior attack on the second level of the two-story building and also pulled some ceiling down to reach the fire that had extended into the attic. Meanwhile, crews from Headquarters had arrived to search the remaining apartments, supply water from hydrants and assist in extinguishing the fire.

The fire was quickly knocked down but crews remained on scene for approximately 2.5 hours doing salvage, overhaul and investigation.  Two tenants were in the process of moving out of the building but three other tenants have been displaced. There were no injuries to the residents or firefighters. Firefighters from the UMD, Headquarters, Lakeside and Woodland Stations responded.

The Duluth Police Department, Minnesota Power and the Red Cross assisted at the fire. Damage estimates are $60,000 to the building and $10,000 to contents. The fire is being investigated by the Duluth Fire Marshal’s Office.
