Duluth Police Respond to a Medical Call Near St. Louis River

At approximately 4:12 p.m., Tuesday, July 5, Duluth Police Officers responded to the 9900 block of Hudson Blvd near the St. Louis River for a medical call. Upon arrival, officers learned that a 6-year-old boy was swimming alone in the river with a life jacket on. Officers gathered that an individual who was kayaking nearby helped the boy get back to shore. Officers interviewed the parent of the 6-year-old boy and learned that the boy and his parent were sailing on the river. The boy wanted to swim next to the sailboat holding a rope that was attached to the boat. At some point, the boy lost hold of the rope and the wind pushed the sailboat further away from the boy. Due to the wind and the currents of the river, the parent was unable to navigate back to the boy to pick him up and was forced to beach the boat ashore. The boy told the parent he was going to swim back to shore. However, the strong current prevented the boy from doing so, which is when the kayaker helped the boy to shore and called 911 due to the boy being extremely cold.
