Projects to improve water service to Duluth Heights/Mall area

The City of Duluth is undertaking two major construction projects that will improve water delivery to meet current and future demands of residents and businesses in the upper Piedmont, Duluth Heights, Duluth International Airport, and Miller Hill Mall area. These projects will begin September 8, 2010. Work is expected to last until November 2011.

The first project involves construction of a 1,000,000 gallon elevated water storage tank at 1710 North Basswood Avenue. The current tanks have a capacity of 500,000 gallons.  The project includes removal of two existing water towers, construction of the new tank, yard piping and construction of a building to house the computerized water management system at a cost of about $2.98 Million.

The second project requires making improvements to the Highland Pump Station. Work includes building modifications, new pumping mechanisms, electrical and computer equipment, and process and yard piping.  This project is estimated at $992,000.

The projects should serve the upper Highland water zone neighborhoods into the next century. Minor disruptions to water service are expected when crews are ready to connect the water pipe to the new tank and pump station.  Affected properties will be notified of service interruptions in advance.
