Public engagement opportunity for St. Louis River restoration projects from 3:30 pm – 6:30 pm on October 6 at Chambers Grove Park

[Duluth, MN] The City of Duluth and the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve invite the public to an opportunity to learn about the array of projects in progress to restore the health of the St. Louis River. The event will take place from 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm on October 6, 2022 at Chambers Grove Park located at 13404 MN-23, Duluth, MN 55808.

The event will be family friendly, featuring a kid’s activity table and snacks. Community members will have the opportunity to share their observations and experiences on the river. Resource managers and educators will be at the event to share an update on the ongoing and upcoming restoration projects. Short, informal presentations will take place from 5:30 pm – 6:00 pm at the pavilion.

Restoration work that will be featured at the event includes efforts at Perch Lake, Mud Lake, invasive species removal and tree planting in black ash forested wetlands along the estuary, sturgeon restoration, manoomin (wild rice) restoration, and a new survey to uncover the ways that the St. Louis River supports community well-being.

The event is coordinated by the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve as they launch a Great Lakes Restoration Initiative funded in partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to remove harmful plants like buckthorn beginning in October this year and plant up to 80,000 trees along bays on islands of the St. Louis River in Spring 2023.  Partners for the event include the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Minnesota Land Trust, City of Duluth, and University of Minnesota Duluth, with support from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
