NATURE OF INCIDENT: Structure Fire
CASE NO.: 1049
INCIDENT DATE: 1/29/2023
INCIDENT TIME: 0646
INCIDENT LOCATION: 3200 block of Restormel St.

At 0646 a.m. on Sunday, January 29th the Duluth Fire Department was dispatched for a report of a fire in a single-family home in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Duluth. The report stated that there were still two family members and several pets in the house. Within minutes, 2 Engine arrived from the Lincoln Park station and reported heavy smoke coming from the second story and the attic of the two-story building. 2 Engine had established a hydrant connection on arrival and advanced attack lines into the structure where they encountered heavy fire in the stairway leading to the upstairs bedrooms. They were able to advance to the second floor where they reported more heavy fire.

The next arriving crews from Headquarters station were able to confirm that all three of the residents had escaped with three dogs. The additional crews assisted in searching the structure and reinforcing the fire attack on the second story and into the attic. The two ladder trucks on scene, 1 Tower from Headquarters and 8 Quint from Spirit Valley provided vertical ventilation and fire attack into the attic from the gable end in the rear of the structure. This allowed the heavy fire in the attic to be extinguished before the roof was penetrated by the fire.

During the rescue search, one dog was located that had perished due to the fire. Two cats are still missing but may have escaped. Residents in the neighborhood are asked to keep a look out for these cats. The occupants, a mother and two daughters are being assisted by caring neighbors and the Red Cross and are displaced from their home.

The fire is being investigated by the Duluth Fire Marshal's office. Damage estimates are initially $150,000 to the structure and contents. 22 firefighters responded to the scene from three stations and were on scene for about 3 hours. There were no injuries to the firefighters.  The Duluth Fire Department would like to thank the Duluth Police, Mayo Ambulance, Minnesota Power, Comfort Systems and the Red Cross for their assistance.
