Public meeting scheduled for Tuesday September 21st on downtown sewer project

The City of Duluth will be hosting a public informational meeting on Tuesday, September 21, 2010, at 8:00 a.m. at the Zeitgeist Arts Building, 222 E. Superior Street.  City staff will present information on the scope of a planned sewer project at the intersection of 3rd Ave East and Superior Street.

During periods of wet weather, raw sewage flows out of the manhole at 3rd Avenue East and Superior Street. This results in health hazards and the potential for the overflows to run into Lake Superior. Sewage overflows can be eliminated at this location by constructing a diversion structure.  The public meeting will discuss the aspects of the construction, timeline, and potential disruptions to traffic. The project is planned for spring 2011.

The City of Duluth is under Consent Decree orders from the United States Environmental Protection Agency to eliminate all sanitary sewer overflows by 2016. This project is one of several that contribute towards the elimination of sewage overflow into Lake Superior. In sum, Duluth will have invested over $70 million towards protecting Lake Superior.
