City of Duluth provides summary on response to Miller Hill Mall roof collapse incident
[DULUTH, MN] At approximately 9:00 AM on Tuesday, March 14, a portion of the roof at Miller Hill Mall collapsed into the building. The building was evacuated. Duluth Fire Department, along with Duluth Police Department, Task Force 2 Urban Search and Rescue, and Duluth Hazmat responded to the incident. DFD conducted primary and secondary searches to look for trapped occupants and found none. No injuries were reported, and all people inside the Mall were accounted for.
There was an initial gas leak that occurred at the time of the collapse that was quickly contained by Public Works and Utilities. At this time, gas and water have been shut off to the building. It is unknown at this time as to when those will be restored.
Structural engineers are assessing damage to the building and will continue to monitor for secondary collapse. The building remains closed until further notice, and the public is asked to stay away from the building at this time.
Thanks to Duluth Fire, Duluth Police, Public Works and Utilities, the Construction Services and Inspections Division, Task Force 2 USAR, Duluth Hazmat, Minnesota Power, Salvation Army, and Mayo Ambulance, and all other partner agencies for their support in the response and in keeping the public safe.
