City of Duluth closing portions of streets to continue Michigan Street Utility Replacement Project beginning Monday, May 1
[DULUTH, MN] The City of Duluth’s Engineering Division is announcing upcoming street closures as a part of the Michigan Street Utility Replacement Project beginning May 1. This continuation of a two-year utility replacement project will include closures on Michigan Street from First Avenue East to Second Avenue East and on Second Avenue East from Michigan Street to Superior Street. A detour route (see included map) will be posted for motorists to use Superior Street. The Northbound I-35 ramp at Second Avenue East will also be affected by this closure. The ramp will remain closed until construction is completed later this summer. Sidewalk accessibility will be maintained along Michigan Street, as will vehicle access for local contract vehicle parking.
The purpose of this multi-year initiative is to replace gas and water mains, and to increase electrical duct bank capacity in Michigan Street from First Avenue West to Third Avenue East. Minnesota Power is also reconstructing several utility vaults in the area along with the duct bank expansion. The overall project, including street restoration, is anticipated to be completed in late August.
