City of Duluth Human Rights Commission seeks nominations for first annual Human Rights Award

[DULUTH, MN] The City of Duluth’s Human Rights Commission is seeking nominations of individuals and businesses/organizations who best embody the mission of the Human Rights Commission for the first-ever Duluth Human Rights Award.

The Human Rights Commission will bestow the honor on one business or organization and one individual in January. “The Duluth Human Rights Award is a special way to recognize both an individual and an organization or a business for their proactive engagement within the City of Duluth for their advocacy and support of human rights,” said Dr. Marsha S. Lue, Chair of the Human Rights Commission of the new award.  “It is important to honor the impactful work individuals, organizations, or businesses have done to help promote equity and cultural diversity, and who also work to eliminate hate and prejudice within our community.”

City of Duluth Human Rights Officer Carl Crawford said of the award, “Community members and businesses alike are doing the good work that supports the mission of this commission already. We just want to lift that work up and shine a light on it in hopes that it will further broaden the volume of that good work in this city, as well as recognize those who have been human rights champions.”

Submissions for nominations will be accepted through December 15, 2023. Duluth-based organizations are eligible to receive the organizational award, and individuals who either live in or work in the City of Duluth are eligible for nomination for the individual award. Self-nominations will not be accepted. The nomination form is available on the City’s website at https://duluthmn.gov/media/ovvfz1ra/hrc-award-nomination-form.pdf. Award recipients will be announced in January of 2024.

The City of Duluth’s Human Rights Commission promotes cultural diversity in Duluth; works toward the elimination of hate, prejudice, and discrimination against persons or groups based on race, gender identity or expression, religion, sexual orientation, ability, or other status; educates the community on issues of discrimination and cultural diversity; advises the City Council and City staff on human rights issues; and promotes the goals and objectives of the Minnesota Human Rights Act. Human Rights Commissioners should reflect the full spectrum of diversity of the community and should be representative of different genders, sexual orientations, religions, economic levels, racial and ethnic identities, age groups, abilities, and property owners and tenants.
