SUBJECT: Duluth Public Library and Nordic Center Duluth to Co-Host Jolabokaflod Festivities at the Main Library
BY: Elizabeth Spehar

[Duluth, MN] - Celebrate Jolabokaflod and kick off Duluth Public Library’s Winter Reading Program on Saturday, December 2 at the Main Library!

Jolabokaflod (yo-lah-bow-kah-flowed) is an Icelandic word that roughly translates to “holiday book flood.” It is a tradition that dates back to World War II when books were among the few unrationed goods available for holiday gift-giving. Today, Jolabokaflod remains a beloved tradition around the world and is celebrated in much the same way it was in the 1940s. Friends and family exchange books, then settle into quiet comfort to read, drink cocoa, and revel in the coziness of winter.

To celebrate, the library will be hosting a quiet community reading space in the Gold Room and an all-ages activities space in the Green Room. Coffee and cocoa will be served and free book lights will be available for participants while supplies last. Nordic Center Duluth will be sharing a special cultural presentation in the Green Room with seasonal stories and songs from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. To learn more about Nordic Center Duluth, visit NordicCenterDuluth.org. No registration is required to participate—drop in any time between 10:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at the Main Library.

The library’s Winter Reading program begins on Friday, December 1 and ends Wednesday, January 31. Readers of all ages are invited to participate by logging reading minutes and earning tickets to be entered in prize drawings! Prizes include gift cards to Target, Zenith Bookstore, and Barnes & Noble. To learn more and sign up for the Winter Reading Program, visit DuluthLibrary.org or stop by any of the library's three locations.
